Turkey to receive part of Russian diesel under US–Russia agreement

Turkey’s energy minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Turkey has agreed to receive a portion of Russian diesel fuel that will be supplied to global markets under an agreement between Moscow and US President Donald Trump.

Agreement on diesel supplies and sources

Ankara receives part of its energy supplies from Russia, as well as from Iran, Azerbaijan and other countries. At the same time Turkey is trying to diversify supplies by concluding new agreements with the US and other partners.

“Russia introduced restrictions on diesel fuel exports in recent months as it began to face this issue. Now they have reached an agreement with Trump on diesel fuel… Thanks to the talks we held, we will be supplying part of this diesel fuel to Turkey,” Bayraktar said.

Timing, sanctions pause and US approvals

Earlier, Bayraktar said, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Russian diesel fuel would have ended up on the global market anyway, and that a 60-day pause in sanctions is needed to assess their impact on global energy supplies.

On 16 October US President Donald Trump suspended the application of sanctions and tariffs against Russia provided for by the “Graham” law. He used a provision that allows for waiving the imposition of restrictions if this is in the national interests of the United States.

On 9 October, after a conversation with Putin, Trump announced agreements on supplying Russian diesel fuel to the American and global markets. Following that, the US Treasury allowed operations involving Russian diesel until April 2027.

Turkey’s plans for gas extraction in the Black Sea

The minister said Turkey plans to commission a second floating gas production platform in the first quarter of 2028. This is part of a plan to increase domestic production.

According to him, bringing the platform online will raise daily gas production in the Black Sea to 45 million cubic metres.
