The overall picture of the currency market The currency market in Ukraine is a combination of different platforms and participants where the price of the hryvnia relative to other currencies is determined. It brings together decisions by the regulator, the behaviour of banks, importers and exporters, and individual transactions by private persons. The key task for the reader is to understand that the term "exchange rate" does not mean a single fixed number but a set of indicators that vary depending on place and time. This is important when you compare the cost of currency for different purposes of exchange or for budgeting. Types of rates and their differences There are main types of rates; each answers a different question and has its function in the market. The official rate serves as a reference for accounting, budget calculations and as a signal for market participants, while market rates reflect the current balance of supply and demand. Understanding the difference between these rates helps avoid confusion and choose the right data for a specific task. You should not expect the official and interbank rates always to be the same, because they depend on different mechanics and time lags. Official rate, NBU and the interbank market The official rate is set by the National Bank (NBU) as a formal indicator for each business day; it serves as a basis for reporting and partly influences market expectations. This rate does not always reflect the current deals taking place on the interbank market where banks buy and sell currency among themselves. The interbank market shows real transactions in large volumes and is often closer to what large exporters and importers see. The difference between the official and interbank rates can indicate the market’s direction and the strength of demand or supply. Cash and card rates Cash rates are the prices offered by exchange offices and banks when buying or selling physical currency. They include margins and transaction costs, so they usually differ from the interbank and official rates. Card rates apply when payments are made by card in a foreign currency or when a bank converts an amount for online payments. Such rates may include cashback or fee features and are applied at the moment funds are debited, which creates differences compared with cash. How the hryvnia’s rate is formed The hryvnia’s rate is determined by the balance of demand and supply for currency, but it also depends on market participants’ expectations. News, political events, foreign trade flows and monetary and credit policy affect sentiment and real transactions. Short-term fluctuations are often driven by speculative operations and changes in liquidity, while long-term trends depend on fundamental economic changes. Understanding which factors dominate is important for correctly reading market signals. Demand, supply and external factors Demand for currency rises when importers pay for goods, investors withdraw capital, or when the public changes its savings. Supply increases due to exports, inflows of investment, or foreign-exchange reserves. External factors include world commodity prices, international financial conditions and geopolitics. They can cause simultaneous changes across all markets and alter the hryvnia’s rate in a short period.
