What is Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the first and best-known cryptocurrency, which operates without a central issuer. It is not issued by any central bank, its rate is not tied to the economy of a specific country, and all transactions are recorded in a distributed ledger, copies of which are stored on thousands of computers around the world.
It is precisely because of the absence of a single control centre that bitcoin is often called an alternative to traditional money. At the same time this is the main reason for its sharp fluctuations: the price is formed solely by supply and demand on exchanges, without the smoothing mechanisms that central banks have.

How Bitcoin originated
The network began operating in 2009, and its principles were described by the developer or group of developers under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The author's true identity is still unknown, and this has become part of the project's history.
In its early years bitcoin remained a technical experiment that interested mainly programmers. Over time a whole industry grew around it: exchanges, payment services, mining companies and thousands of other cryptocurrencies that use similar principles.

How the network works
Blockchain and encryption
Transactions are grouped into blocks, and each block is cryptographically linked to the previous one using the SHA-256 hashing algorithm. It is impossible to change a record retroactively without rewriting the entire chain after it — and that requires computational power unattainable in practice.
The transaction data is converted into a 256-bit number that also contains information about previous blocks. Wallet addresses are not linked to passport data, so payments are pseudonymous: the flow of funds is visible to everyone, but the owner's identity is not.

Mining and limited issuance
New coins appear as a reward for those who validate transactions with computing power. Approximately every four years this reward halves — an event known as the halving.
Because of this mechanism the total number of bitcoins is limited to approximately 21 million coins. It is precisely this limited emission that underpins supporters' arguments about bitcoin's ability to preserve value over the long term.

What affects the rate
Several groups of factors influence the price at the same time: demand from large institutional investors, regulators’ decisions in the USA and Europe, the situation on stock markets and the overall investors’ appetite for risk. Technical events in the network itself, notably halvings, also play a noticeable role.
The market operates 24/7, so the price can change significantly within a few hours. Rates differ across exchanges, and the figure on this page is the weighted average across major platforms.

Where to buy bitcoin
The most common way is cryptocurrency exchanges that work with Ukrainian cards. There are also P2P-platforms where users trade directly with each other, specialised online exchangers and crypto ATMs.
Regardless of the method, pay attention to deposit and withdrawal fees, identity verification requirements and the platform's reputation. Differences in fees between services can be more significant than short-term fluctuations in the exchange rate.

About risks
Cryptocurrencies are high‑risk instruments. The price can fall by tens of percent in a short time, and funds lost due to an error in the transfer address or third‑party access to keys cannot be recovered.
