Design platform Figma announced the rollout of new features that set clear rules for how AI agents operate within its environment. The main aim of the updates is to help artificial intelligence better understand companies’ design systems and to strictly follow brand guidelines when generating content.

Figma Specs — a Markdown-based rules editor
Figma introduced Figma Specs — a Markdown-based editor that lets teams describe a design language in a single document. The document will serve as a reference for specialists and for AI agents.
Specs can be saved as a separate file or placed directly on the canvas. The document can integrate elements from the Figma canvas, FigJam diagrams, code layers and design fragments.

Code Layers in public beta
The Code Layers feature, which adds the ability to code directly on the canvas to create interactive prototypes, is now available in open beta; it was previously in a private beta since June. Code layers allow design and code to be combined within a single canvas.
Users will be able to ask an AI agent to convert a design into code or to modify a specific portion of code for rapid prototype creation. This should speed up work on interactive product samples.
Support for over 20 tools via the MCP protocol
Figma also announced support for more than 20 new tools via the MCP protocol, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot and the Indian startup Sarvam. Connecting these tools is expected to expand AI integration capabilities within workflows.
“Today 17 times more lines of code are being created than before, but the number of releases has increased by only 1.3 times. A large portion of this code is written not for market release, but for product exploration — effectively, for its design,” said Loredana Krishan, head of design at Figma.
