How much does preparing for a three-day blackout cost: key expenses

Calculating a minimal “blackout kit” for three days shows it costs on average 4,000 UAH for one person and up to 12,000 UAH for a family. The calculation includes water, food, medicines, light sources and the ability to charge a phone.

Required volume and cost of water for three days

The calculation assumes 3 litres of drinking water per day for one adult, plus an additional 10–12 litres per day for hygiene and food preparation. Over three days this amounts to roughly 9 litres of drinking water and 30–36 litres of technical water — a total of 39–45 litres per adult.

For two adults and a child this is at least 117–135 litres. A 6-litre bottle of still water costs about 68 UAH, so 12 litres of drinking water for one person is approximately 136 UAH. Jerrycans and containers for technical water cost from about 100 UAH to 1,000 UAH depending on size and place of purchase; for a family, storage containers to hold a supply may cost around 1,500–2,000 UAH.

Food for three days and estimated cost

It is recommended to include canned goods, dried or cured meat, crispbreads, rusks, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, energy bars and other long-shelf-life products in the supply.

  • Can of beans: approximately 58–72 UAH.
  • Canned fish: approximately from 60–100 UAH and up.
  • Pack of crispbreads: about 30–35 UAH.
  • 200 g of raisins or dates: about 57–60 UAH.
  • Dried apricots: about 153 UAH.

If you add nuts, biscuits, chocolate, pâté, fruit or juices, a three-day food supply for one person will cost roughly 1,000–1,300 UAH. For two adults and a child the indicative amount is about 3,000–3,900 UAH depending on the diet.

Lighting, communication and power banks: prices and needs

A 20,000 mAh power bank in October 2026 costs roughly 900–1,600 UAH depending on the model. Rechargeable LED lamps are sold from roughly 200–460 UAH. For a basic scenario one good power bank and one or two independent light sources are usually sufficient for one person.

Families are advised to have at least two power banks so that if one discharges or fails, communication can be maintained for everyone. If starting “from scratch” — without a power bank, torch, food stock and water containers — the estimated cost of the kit matches the figures above: about 4,000 UAH for one person and up to 12,000 UAH for a family.
