The United Kingdom launches three refugee resettlement routes

The Home Office has announced the launch of three new refugee resettlement routes; applications from potential sponsors will open on 29 October 2026. The programmes provide support with housing, education, employment and integration.

Sponsorship model and role of organisations

All three routes will operate on a lead sponsor model: accredited charities and community organisations will coordinate the process, while the direct sponsors will be local communities, universities or employers. Sponsors must arrange the necessary post-arrival support for refugees, including accommodation and integration assistance.

Participation by sponsoring organisations does not give them the authority to decide immigration status — the relevant checks and decisions remain with the Home Office. The department will also verify candidates’ identities, their eligibility against the criteria and any security risks.

Who the programmes cover and the requirements

At the initial stage the routes will apply only to people in seven specified countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Uganda and Kenya. Candidates must have left their country of origin, sought protection in the country where they are residing and been officially recognised as refugees by the relevant authority.

In addition, applicants must meet two timing conditions: they must be physically present in one of the seven countries and be registered with the relevant state authorities or the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) by 1 October 2026. Mere presence in one of these states without registration and formal recognition of refugee status is not sufficient.

Launch timetable and pathway to permanent settlement

From 29 October 2026 the Home Office will begin accepting applications from charities and non-profit organisations for accreditation as lead sponsors. The first resettlements under the community and education routes are expected in autumn 2027, while a separate employment route is planned to open for applications in spring 2027.

The number of people admitted will depend on sponsors’ capacity to provide the required support. The UK government notes that the routes envisage a five-year pathway to settlement, but this does not guarantee automatic acquisition of such status: participants must meet immigration requirements and complete all procedures. Conditions for including family members in the sponsorship agreement and their resettlement require further clarification from the government.
