Electricians, plumbers and carpenters will benefit most from the era of artificial intelligence (AI) — Nvidia

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang said the biggest financial winners from the era of artificial intelligence (AI) will be skilled tradespeople. He explained that the industry requires substantial physical infrastructure to deploy and train powerful digital models.

Not just chips and algorithms: buildings and power grids are needed

Artificial intelligence depends on buildings, power stations, transmission lines, cooling systems and fibre-optic networks. Capital facilities and grid connections are required to train and support models.

By “factories” Huang means large-scale data centres and the complex infrastructure that keeps digital models running and scaling. The scale of deploying such facilities is already being described as one of the great economic bets.

Which professions will be in greater demand

“The sector will need hundreds of thousands of workers in these trades to build new AI factories,” Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang commented. According to him, he was referring to the manual trades needed to build and maintain data centres.

The specialists cited as being in demand include:

  • industrial electricians
  • welders
  • heavy machinery operators
  • bricklayers
  • refrigeration specialists
  • maintenance technicians

The data-centre boom has already sparked a sharp rise in demand for trades linked to power networks and construction projects.
