According to Andriy Zakrevskyi, deputy director of the Association of Energy and Natural Resources (Асоціація енергетичних та природних ресурсів), this year Kyiv residents have purchased batteries totalling 3 ГВт, which should reduce the risk of a “cold famine” in the city this season.
Volumes of purchased and connected batteries
The expert noted that residents have brought batteries into flats and private houses, and the total stored capacity has reached 3 GW. At present, batteries with a combined capacity of 800 MW are already operational and connected within the city and surrounding areas.

According to the author of the assessment, city residents have accumulated a “colossal reserve power” that allows load to be distributed during short outages. The sales statistics cited by the expert formed the basis for the figures given.
Household self-sufficiency and outage schedules
The specialist estimates that around 40% of Kyiv residents have effectively become self-sufficient thanks to their own generation and storage systems — nearly half the city’s population. The company DTEK (ДТЕК), the analyst said, will be able to supply electricity for at least a few hours a day, enough to recharge domestic stations.

As the expert added, most weather forecasts predict a milder winter than last year, so network load should be lower and one or two rounds of cuts may be sufficient to guarantee service across the whole city. “I am confident this will not lead to a ‘cold famine’, because the winter will be warm,” emphasised Andriy Zakrevskyi.
