Most congested border checkpoints — the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (DPSU)

According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (ДПСУ), spokesman Andriy Demchenko said that the most congested border checkpoints are Ustyluh in Volyn, Krakovets and Shehyni in Lviv region. Queues can form there due to periodic increases in the flow of vehicles on certain days.

Where the heaviest congestion is recorded

“The flow of vehicles periodically increases on certain days. Given that the border with Poland remains the most popular for people, there can be local pressure on checkpoints there. Traditionally people choose three directions where crossings are most active and where vehicle build-ups can be recorded. These are Ustyluh in Volyn, Krakovets and Shehyni in Lviv region,” Demchenko said.

Demchenko also advised using other checkpoints where possible, since when the three mentioned points are busy, neighbouring crossings can have zero queues. Queues arise precisely because most people choose the traditional routes for crossing the border.

Where to check queue conditions and which documents are required

You can check the level of congestion at checkpoints on the Western Regional Directorate’s Facebook page, where information for each direction is updated every three hours. This is a source of operational data on load at the checkpoints.

passport control with travelers in line

Border guards check your foreign passport. For visa-free entry it must be biometric and valid for at least three months after the planned date of exit from the EU; some countries may require a longer validity period — up to six months. If you hold an ordinary foreign passport, you will need to obtain a visa to enter the EU.

Also required is an insurance policy that must cover at least 30 000 euros of expenses and be valid throughout the Schengen Area. This can be travel or medical insurance, depending on the purpose of the trip.
