Cost of charging an electric vehicle in Ukraine: 100 km at home and at stations

According to the Institute of Automotive Market Research (IDA), the cost of travelling by electric vehicle in Ukraine can differ by more than ten times depending on where you charge: assuming consumption of 18 kWh per 100 km, night-time home charging costs approximately 39 UAH, whereas at a fast public station it is almost 396 UAH.

Comparison of the cost for 100 km

For the calculations we used a representative electric vehicle with consumption of 18 kWh per 100 km; this figure already accounts for charging losses. Under these assumptions charging at a fast station is approximately 10.2 times more expensive than at home under the night tariff.

The difference between regular public alternating-current (AC) stations and fast direct-current (DC) stations is about 36 UAH per 100 km. For an exact calculation you need to take into account actual consumption, the tariffs of particular stations and any additional charges for parking or idling.

Public station tariffs and examples for a single charge

Prices at public stations in the sample varied: at AC stations from 6.99 to 37 UAH/kWh, at fast DC stations (with power from 40 kW) — from 11.99 to 39.99 UAH/kWh. If a driver replenishes 40 kWh, the costs at median tariffs are indicated in the source.

At the most expensive stations in the sample such a 40 kWh charge can cost almost 1 600 UAH. Tariffs differ significantly depending on the operator and the specific location.

Home tariffs and charging equipment power

For household consumers the standard electricity tariff is 4.32 UAH/kWh. Owners of dual-tariff meters can charge an electric vehicle from 23:00 to 07:00 at half the price — 2.16 UAH/kWh.

Savings depend on the power of the charging equipment: at 2.3 kW over eight night hours you can obtain about 18.4 kWh. For households with electric heating the first 2 000 kWh per month cost 2.64 UAH/kWh, and above that — 4.32 UAH/kWh; the limit applies to the household’s total consumption, including charging the car.

Regional availability of fast chargers

In the sample the largest number of fast charging locations with known tariffs was recorded in the Kyiv region — 573, followed by Lviv region (182), Odesa region (142), Dnipropetrovsk region (139) and Kharkiv region (119). Four networks together cover almost 90% of the records in the relevant sample.

Among the regions studied the median price for fast charging is lowest in Mykolaiv region — 20.50 UAH/kWh, and highest in Rivne region — 22.99 UAH/kWh. One address can contain several charging locations, so these data are not the same as the number of unique addresses of gas stations or charging complexes.
