Why a demand deposit is sometimes more important than a high rate

As of 1 September 2026, the total amount of individuals’ deposits in banks of Ukraine exceeded 1.76 trillion UAH. This was reported by the Deposit Guarantee Fund for Individuals (ФГВФО).

Deposit volumes and structure as of 1 September 2026

According to the Deposit Guarantee Fund for Individuals (ФГВФО), the volume of deposits rose in August by 9.6 billion UAH. The larger share of deposits is placed in the national currency — 1.15 trillion UAH — and demand deposits account for 71.15%.

Banks offer term deposits for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months, as well as demand deposits with rates that typically range from 4–5% per annum.

How a demand deposit is useful and how it works

A demand deposit (on‑demand deposit) is an account from which a client can withdraw or top up funds almost at any time while still earning interest. Idea Bank describes such a product as a tool for a financial safety cushion or a temporary placement before investing or opening a term deposit.

“Even the most profitable deposit won’t help if you need the money tomorrow. That is why, alongside term deposits, demand deposits play an important role,” said Oleksandr Tymofiiev, director of the retail sales department at Idea Bank.

Idea Bank offers the «Free Funds» deposit with a yield of 5% per annum in UAH, allowing free top‑ups and partial withdrawals, and online management via the O.Bank mobile app. Interest is paid monthly, and the funds remain available to the client at virtually any time.

The minimum deposit amount is from 100 UAH when opened online or from 1,000 UAH in a branch. The placement term is 1 month with automatic renewal. The deposit allows topping up and partial withdrawals.

“Interest is calculated on the actual balance in the account and paid monthly. If during the month a client tops up the deposit or partially uses the funds, the return is calculated based on the real balance. Thanks to this, such a deposit remains a flexible instrument: money can work even when a person is actively using it,” said Oleksandr Tymofiiev, director of the retail sales department at Idea Bank.

According to the expert, part of savings can be held in term deposits with higher rates, while part can be kept in demand deposits for access to funds. Typically, rates on demand deposits do not exceed 5% per annum, whereas term rates at banks average 8–16% per annum depending on the term; this autumn banks are offering the highest yields mainly on 6-, 9- and 12-month deposits, mostly from 12% to 16.5% per annum.

Earlier it was reported that Idea Bank’s deposit portfolio in UAH equivalent grew by 19.9% over the first eight months of 2026 to 5.8 billion UAH.
