Moldova bought 2 million cubic metres of gas from Ukraine and plans to increase imports

Prime Minister of Moldova Vasile Tofan said that Moldova purchased 2 million cubic metres of natural gas from Ukraine at a price lower than the previous one. The authorities plan to increase imports to reduce fuel supply costs before the new export restrictions from Ukraine come into force.

Energocom connected to the Ukrainian gas exchange and trialled the mechanism

According to the prime minister, the company Energocom connected to the Ukrainian gas exchange within a short time, which made it possible to buy gas directly on the domestic market. This allowed them to test the purchase mechanism and compare prices with existing contracts.

“The volumes are small — 2 million cubic metres, but we wanted to test the mechanism: whether we can buy gas in Ukraine more cheaply and terminate the contracts we already have. The mechanism worked. Energocom earned from this,”

— said Vasile Tofan.

Deadlines for exports from Ukraine and Moldova’s plans for additional purchases

Private companies in Ukraine can export natural gas until 30 November; after that the restrictions will come back into effect and remain until March, so the Moldovan authorities are seeking to accelerate negotiations and purchase additional volumes. The authorities expect that additional purchases in Ukraine will help reduce gas supply costs and could, over time, allow for lower tariffs for consumers.

In October 2026 Ukraine partially resumed gas exports: private producers can export up to 15% of the volume of gas they injected into the gas transmission system in the previous month. Companies sell gas at auctions and can arrange deliveries, including at the border with Moldova.
