Experienced American mechanic John Ling named three popular car models that he has found to break down frequently. He also advises taking potential repair costs into account before buying.
Audi A4: electronic failures after 4–6 years
According to the mechanic, the Audi A4’s extensive high-tech equipment can, over time, turn into an “electronic mess”, leading to numerous dashboard error messages. Most failures of the onboard computers, sensors and modules appear after four to six years of use due to the premature introduction of insufficiently refined technologies.
The starting price of this model is $42 000 (about 1 890 000 UAH). Besides the electronics, specific suspension components and specialised hub bearings incur significant costs when replaced.

Volkswagen Jetta: loss of reliability after about 128 750 km
The Volkswagen Jetta has a base price from $21 995 (approximately 990 000 UAH) and initially offers a stable, smooth ride. According to the mechanic, after roughly 128 750 km the car loses reliability and repairs begin to require significant investment.
An additional problem is the limited availability of some genuine parts, meaning their replacement costs 30−60% more than equivalent work on other cars in this class.

Ford F-150: aluminium construction makes body repairs more difficult
The full-size Ford F-150 remains popular, but the mechanic points to a key vulnerability: a body built from aluminium parts rather than high-strength steel. Using aluminium reduces fuel consumption, but in collisions the material crumples differently, which complicates and increases the cost of body repairs.
The base price of the model starts at $38 810 (approximately 1 746 000 UAH), while premium versions can reach $80 000 (over 3 600 000 UAH).
