Staying abroad for more than 30 days may lead to loss of UKR status

Staying outside Poland for more than 30 days can be grounds for termination of temporary protection and loss of the UKR mark (denoting temporary protection); this applies to trips to Ukraine and to other countries, as well as to receiving protection in another EU state.

PESEL and UKR status after a trip

PESEL (personal identification number) and the UKR mark in the registry are different things: PESEL is an identification number, while UKR is an entry recording temporary protection. Loss of the UKR mark does not automatically mean the PESEL number itself is cancelled, and a paper confirmation of PESEL assignment does not guarantee the status remains valid.

A short trip on its own does not necessarily result in loss of status, but after returning it is advisable to check the current entry in the PESEL registry: the fact of crossing the border does not automatically confirm that the UKR status remained valid or has been restored.

How return and documents affect status

The Polish Border Guard recommends having a valid passport and an up-to-date Diia.pl electronic document when entering; lacking such documents at control may cause problems with maintaining status. If the status has been terminated, it will not be restored automatically after return — you must contact the gmina authority to find out the reason for the change in the record and clarify the possibility of re-registration.

You should also bear in mind that if a person has obtained temporary protection in another EU country or holds another residence permit in Poland, this may be an independent ground for termination of UKR. In the event of a passport change or if the person was not confirmed in time, the data should be updated at the gmina; those who received UKR by declaration without presenting a travel document were required to present a passport by 31 August 2026.

Benefits, medical care and checks

Having UKR does not automatically guarantee entitlement to all forms of assistance — each programme has its own requirements. After a prolonged absence you should check both the entry in the PESEL registry and the conditions for receiving particular benefits.

For the 800+ benefit the actual residence of the applicant and the child in Poland is important; ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych) may verify presence and request explanations. From 1 February 2026 there is a requirement of professional activity for Ukrainian citizens with UKR status, and from 5 March 2026 the UKR status by itself does not grant entitlement to full free medical treatment for all groups.

If benefits have been stopped or were paid in excess, the money may be reclaimed with interest. Check messages in your personal eZUS account (eZUS (previously PUE ZUS)) regarding document requests, response deadlines and notices of suspension of assistance.

When and where to apply after returning

If your status has changed after return or payments have been stopped, you need to establish the reason with the city office or the gmina — urząd miasta or urząd gminy. To check the registry status you can order a certificate at any gmina authority, but obtaining a certificate and making changes to the record are different procedures.

If changes are related to border-crossing data, it may be necessary to contact the Border Guard — Straż Graniczna. Other institutions to approach depending on the issue: ZUS regarding 800+ payments, NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) regarding the grounds for access to state medical care, and MOPS (Miejski Ośrodek Pomocy Społecznej) or GOPS (Gminny Ośrodek Pomocy Społecznej) regarding local social assistance.

Prepare documents confirming travel dates and observe the deadlines stated in official letters. If you disagree with a decision on refusal or the repayment of funds, check the appeal procedure and time limits in the decision itself.
