The insurance company (СК) «Експрес Страхування» explained the specifics of insurance cover during long-distance trips in Ukraine and how to act in the first minutes after a road traffic accident. The article looks at the differences between Compulsory Motor Third-Party Liability Insurance (ОСЦПВ) and Comprehensive Auto Insurance (КАСКО), the procedure to follow at the scene and examples of costs to restore a vehicle.

Which policies cover risks on the road
Compulsory Motor Third-Party Liability Insurance (ОСЦПВ) covers damage caused to other participants in an accident but does not pay for repair of the at-fault driver’s own vehicle. Comprehensive Auto Insurance (КАСКО) protects the owner’s vehicle and, depending on the programme, can cover accidents regardless of fault as well as risks such as natural hazards, falling objects, unlawful actions by third parties, fire or military actions.
Before setting off you should check the validity period of your ОСЦПВ policy, the terms of your КАСКО, the list of insured risks, the territory of coverage and the insurer’s claims procedure. It is also recommended to record the insurer’s contact details and to find out how vehicle inspection and repair are organised in another region.
How to act at the scene of an accident and the European accident statement
The first steps after a collision: ensure everyone’s safety, call emergency services if there are injured people, turn on hazard lights and mark the scene. Do not rush to establish fault or move the vehicle unless necessary.
After that, contact your insurer, photograph and film the position of the vehicles, the damage, road signs and markings, and exchange contact and insurance details with the other party. If the conditions for the European accident statement (two insured vehicles, no injuries, agreement between the parties and no signs of intoxication) are met, the accident can be settled without calling the police.

Repair costs and claims statistics
Due to the high level of technology in modern cars, repairs may require diagnostics and calibration of electronic systems, not just replacement of visible parts. Company specialists estimate that over the past few years the cost of repairs in Ukraine has increased by approximately 40−50%.
In September 2026 the average claim payment for accidents under КАСКО contracts amounted to 76.5 thousand UAH; road traffic accidents accounted for over 88% of all settled insurance events under КАСКО. The company’s largest payment in 2026 reached 5.9 million UAH after a three-car accident in which the client’s vehicle was declared a constructive total loss.
Service network and claims handling
The company provides claims handling across Ukraine and supports the client until the vehicle is fully restored. The network of partner service stations comprises more than 100 workshops where repair of an insured vehicle can be arranged.
The company (ТДВ) «Експрес Страхування» was founded in 2008 with the participation of Ukravto Group; the company has over 300 insurance agents across Ukraine and says its client base has grown by more than twice in the past year. Claims are handled with the involvement of an expert who supervises the progress of restorative work.
